Happiness Is Found In The Contrast

In Life

Travel Ups and Downs

Travelling is a rollercoaster ride full of highs and lows.

Since I began travelling in 2012, I’ve been up and down like a yoyo.

I have felt happy, sad, lost, joyful, depressed, elated, lonely, angry, confused, focused and anxious.

As much as I want to, I’ve realised that it’s impossible to feel good all the time.

It’s not human to expect to feel good all the time, and in fact I really believe that there’s great beauty to be found in those lows.

Let’s explore this more.

Beauty Comes Out Of The Contrast

We all want to be happy, but in striving towards happiness we only want to experience the highs, while doing our utmost to avoid the lows.

But that’s not human, because our appreciation for life, and in fact happiness, or contentment (whatever you want to label it) comes out of the contrast.

In the same way that there can never be a mountain peak without valley…

We don’t know black, without knowing white.

We don’t know hard, without knowing soft.

We don’t know confidence, without knowing humiliation.

We don’t know happiness, without knowing sadness.

Yes, it’s clear that beauty is found in contrast.

So instead of hiding from the inevitable lows, we need to accept and embrace them, because it’s the contrast that gives us a reference for the highs.

Of all the worthwhile journey’s I’ve embarked on in my life, I’ve always found great strength in the low points, struggles, and challenges I faced along the way.

The bumps in the road are part of the journey and they are there to show us how beautiful life can be on the other side of the road.

So When You Find Yourself Feeling The Lows…

Remind yourself that:

  • The lows are inevitable and part of life. Accept that.
  • The lows are always temporary. This will not be your reality forever.
  • Never try to block or mask the lows. Feel and accept them exactly as they are.
  • To achieve anything worthwhile in life you have to be willing to embrace what the journey is giving you.
  • Strength and appreciation is always found in contrast. It’s the struggles and testing experiences that shape mould our highest moments.

It can be very difficult to see the light in the low times, but remind yourself that these times are shaping the ups that will follow for you.

The view at the top of a mountain is complemented by the gruelling climb. It’s part of the process and something to be thankful for because it’s always teaching you and guiding you towards the things that are important in life.

About the Author

Hello everyone, I’m Dan – a 28-year-old social entrepreneur and writer from the north of England, living in Bucharest, Romania. I’m currently writing my first book about my 4-year journey around the world seeking wisdom and life-lessons from everyday people I met hitchhiking and Couchsurfing.

I discovered that travel, if approached with the right mindset, can be life-changing, and a trip combining travel, purpose and introspection is a great way to learn, challenge oneself and change for the better. Now my mission in life is to share what I’ve learned to inspire others to embark on their own journey of self-discovery and use travel, entrepreneurship and technology as a means to make the world a better place.

I’m also the founder of Podstel – a vision to help humanity belong and grow by creating a worldwide network of ‘homes’ that bring locals and travellers together to share their stories, passions and skills. The first two Podstels are open and thriving in Bucharest, so if you’re passing through, be sure to come and say hi, or stay the night with us.
