Be yourself, everybody else is taken – Oscar Wilde
A Strange Society
We live in a strange society which idolises a minority of individuals.
Actors. Singers. Writers. Footballers. Models.
We live vicariously through them.
We wish were more like them. We wish we had what they had. We wish we were somewhere else.
Their body. Their friends. Their fame. Their materials. Their experiences. Their life.
It builds up frustration and resentment inside us. Fuelled by desire, we place even higher expectations on ourselves, and life becomes a never-ending marathon with no finish line.
But it’s not our fault right?
Everyday their messages are thrown in our faces, and even if we want to, it’s difficult to hide from the noise.
Despite society’s focus and attention on a minority of individuals, one poses the question:
What makes them anymore important than you?
You Are You
Yes, there’s more than them…. there’s you, too.
Even your idiosyncrasies. Your scars. Your bent nose. Your quirky personality. It’s all you and makes you utterly unique.
Putting You into Perspective
Not only is it a miracle that you are here, but have joy in the feeling that no one else can ever be you.
No matter how hard they try.
Your imperfectly perfect combination of DNA will never exist again.
The experiences that have brought you to where you are today will exist again in the same form.
The sun won’t set the same way.
The air will blow in another direction.
The leaves will fall in another location.
Enjoy and celebrate that.
Acceptance means being ok with who you are, where you are and what you have.
The further you are from yourself, the more negative emotions you will experience in your life.
If you find it difficult to bathe in your flaws and accept who you are as a person then there will always be a subtle sense of resistance towards everything you experience in your life.
Overcoming feelings of jealousy, resentment, anger and frustration happens when you consciously arrive at a place of acceptance with yourself.
When you are feeling down, remind yourself that you are a miracle and you are utterly unique.
Don’t bother looking outside, playing the comparison game and getting anxious about what you don’t have.
Look within, trust yourself and focus on improving what you have already got.
You have been given a gift to experience, so make sure you don’t give that gift away by wishing you were somewhere else.
Your mind. Your story. Your vision.
Thanks for reading and all the best,

About the Author
Hello everyone, I’m
I discovered that travel, if approached with the right mindset, can be life-changing, and a trip combining travel, purpose and introspection is a great way to learn, challenge oneself and change for the better. Now my mission in life is to share what I’ve learned to inspire others to embark on their own journey of self-discovery and use travel, entrepreneurship and technology as a means to make the world a better place.
I’m also the founder of Podstel – a vision to help humanity belong and grow by creating a worldwide network of ‘homes’ that bring locals and travellers together to share their stories, passions and skills. The first two Podstels are open and thriving in Bucharest, so if you’re passing through, be sure to come and say hi, or stay the night with us.
